Move over Scentsy Chef...there's a new party in town!

I have said it before and I will say it again...everyone looks better with a tan. It makes clothes look better, lip gloss look brighter, arms look slimmer, and it really just puts a smile on peoples faces. I would put money on the fact that most girls feel better about themselves in the summer time vs. winter simply due to the fact that their skin has a tint of gold.

Although I am obsessed with being tan, I'm not obsessed with the fact that I had a little skin cancer scare last year. I am irish, I have freckles, and I had a very small basel cell on my eye lid. Everything is fine, they removed it with ease and you would never be able to tell it was there. BUT...I am now more cautious when it comes to tanning. I refuse to be pale but am not a moron. I know that it isn't smart for me to fry my skin like I did during spring break so many years ago. Because of this, I have discovered spray tanning and I'm hooked! I usually go to a salon near my house, pay my $25 and stand in a booth for 10 seconds as a cool mist covers my body. It's quick, easy, and within minutes, I'm "tan", well I guess you can call it tan compared to my normal pale skin. The booth is far from ideal, but until recently I thought that was the only choice I had here besides buying a self tanner from the store. Luckily I happened to find out about this new mobile spray tanning company who offers "spray tan parties", so I jumped at the opportunity to gather my girlfriends and introduce them to my new found love.

I mean seriously, if someone is going to have a house party, do they really want to sit in your living room, look at baskets, candles, or tupperware, and sip on soda? No way. Who wouldn't pay $25 to get tan and tipsy. I provided the wine and the girls brought over their pale, make-up less bodies to get bronze. Sunny, from West Coast Tanning set up her pop up tanning tent in my basement and we took turns going downstairs, stripping down, and having her tan us. As you can probably tell through my writing, I'm not a modest person. I opted to get sprayed in a thong and nothing else. I think my next venture will be completely nude. You don't have to bare it all, you can wear a bathing suit, bra and undies, whatever you feel comfortable in. It seriously was the perfect Thursday night. Friends, several bottles of wine, and a beautiful tan. I couldn't ask for more.

20 minutes before this...I was the palest thing you have ever seen. OBSESSED with the spray tan! I'm already looking forward to my next party and staying tan all through the winter!

Why You Should Get a Custom Spray Tan Rather than Use an Automatic Spray Tan Booth

When it comes to the options that are available to you for tanning these days things can get a little confusing. There are tanning beds, spray tans, tanning booths, stand up tanning booths and high pressure tanning and…well, things can get a little muddled for a tanning pro let alone a new comer to tanning! So today we thought we would share a few tips on why it is better to get a custom professionally applied spray tan rather than use an automatic spray tan booth. Both of these options offer the opportunity to get a sunless tanning experience; however, if given a choice, our clients would choose the professionally applied spray tanning option every time!

5 Reasons You Should Get a Professional Spray Tan Rather than Use an Automatic Spray Tan Booth

1. Personal Attention

While walking in to a spray tanning booth may give the appearance of getting a professional spray tan, the lack of personal attention means that your “professional” spray tan is going to be only as good as the machine that gave it to you! With a custom spray tan you have a professional spray tanning technician with you at all times, applying your spray tan and making sure that every place on your body receives an even natural looking tan.

2. No Detail is Missed

The personal attention in #1 also explains why no detail is missed when you use custom spray tanning. With your own personal tanning technician (who will explain every step as they go) you will not end up with those irritating half moon circles under your buttocks where the automatic spray tan booth didn’t spray. Custom spray tanning also means that your tan will be applied evenly so that you do not wind up with an uneven tan or dripping streaks that often happen in automated booths since there are no explicit directions being given to you to let you know precisely what to do and when to do it!

3. The Ability To Take Care of Certain Areas!

Everybody has areas of their body that could use a little extra tan – did you know that many body builders give the illusion of having much firmer abs by the method in which they apply their sunless tan? Automated spray tanning booths are unable to give that type of attention to detail and if you are looking to get a tan that not only bronzes but also flatters then you will definitely want to talk to a custom spray tanning technician!

4. Customize Your Tan to Your Needs!

When you step in to an automated spray tanning booth there are no questions about areas that you would like a little darker, or areas that need a little touching up from your last spray tan, instead there is one flat tan that is applied all over your body. When you get a custom airbrush tan your personal tanning technician will maintain an open line of communication about what you desire from your spray tanning experience and they will be able to customize your tan to your specific needs!

5. The Outcome

Nobody wants to look unnatural!  We have all heard the horror stories of bad Mystic tans or even experienced them firsthand.  Unfortunately these stories and experiences have given spray tanning a bad name and the first thing everyone says is......they make you look orange!  In many cases this is true, especially when using a spray tan booth or self tanners.  At WestCoast, we use the absolute best solution available.  We have researched and tested countless sunless formulas to ensure we provide our clients with the most beneficial solution for their skin, and of course the most natural color you will find.

Final Custom Spray Tan Thoughts

There is a reason that most of our clients prefer a custom spray tan, they love the personal attention and the ability to cater their tanning experience to their own bodies rather than the shape that a machine thinks they should be! If you are new to spray tanning, a professionally applied WestCoast custom spray tan is definitely the way to go if you are looking for that natural looking tan!  If you've been considering a UV free spray tan give us a call today and let us introduce you to THE NEW ERA OF TANNING!

Trick or Treat & Show Off with a WestCoast Spray Tan

I love Halloween!! I always slightly loathe the process of trying to figure out what the heck I am going to be, but when the night actually arrives, I love getting all dolled up with the girls and have so much fun getting into costume. Halloween is the one time of year when you get to dress up (usually a little on the sexier side) and rock fun hair, makeup and dance the night away!

A word of wisdom that I must include is to have fun with your look, and go all out!! Get a fun and sassy wig to go with your ensemble, rock a shade of lipstick that you would never wear any other day…and girl, please get a spray tan!! When your Halloween pics are plastered all over Facebook, in your barely-there costume, you will thank me when you gams are oh-so-golden and you look super skinny!

The last few years everyones been fist pumpin and rocking the Jersey Shore look, I have friends that throw Jersey Shore Parties and go all out in character with over the top hair gel and spray tans.  Everyone has their favorite, but of course the most outrageous of them all, I think we can all agree, is SNOOKI.  It’s no surprise that just about everyone wants to be like her…at least for Halloween. Already we’ve had several women get their Snooki style spray tan (and it wasn't even for Halloween).

Of course, the Snooki style spray tan isn’t your average spray tan. What we’re calling the Snooki special starts with an extra DARK level of our signature color, we then have you dry completely, and then we finish you off with a second application just like the first, so you are DOUBLE DARK!   Still want it darker, we will even give you a third application (for an additional charge) the next day after you have showered & rinsed the original off.  Guido's are welcome too.  Need a sixpack to take to the party?  Not exactly "the situation" yourself?  We can help give you the appearance that you have them (at least from a distance).  Think you are "the situation", and already have some?  A dark spray tan will define them and make them stand out.

Halloween is just around the corner, and we are already booking appointments!  Everyone knows this is the time to show off in those barely-there costumes and look your sexiest.  Whatever costume you decide to wear, make sure you don't forget the MUST HAVE ACCESSORY - A WESTCOAST SPRAY TAN and make this years costume one to remember!

The Benefits of Spray Tanning

Millions of people around the globe turn to the art of spray tanning each year to ensure they maintain their sun-kissed look regardless of the weather outside. Until recently, sunbeds were the most popular form of getting an all over tan however recent studies have shown that the overuse of sunbeds can pose as many health risks to the skin as sitting in the sun all day does. Hence the increasing popularity of spray tan.

Spray Tanning Benefits

The main benefits of this particular tanning process are varied, the main ones of which are listed below:

- Because the tanning solution used during the process is sprayed onto the skin as a fine mist, it is easy to get a smooth, streak-free finish. Providing you choose an experienced spray tanning therapist or you have plenty of practice yourself, you should always end up with a perfect looking tan with very few, if any, blemishes.

- You can literally get an all over tan if you want.  This type of tan is virtually impossible to get by lying in the sun - unless you're sunbathing nude - and most people go a shocking shade of red before turning brown when their tan is naturally sun enduced!

- Spray tanning is a great way of getting a tan regardless of where you live and what time of the year it is. If you live somewhere that doesn't see a lot of sunbathing weather it doesn't matter - you can still get a perfect sun-kissed tan simply by spraying it on. The same goes for the winter months when the sunshine isn't strong enough to cause natural tanning, or if you work indoors throughout the day and rarely get to bask in the sunshine.

- The wide range of tanning solutions available means you can literally pick what shade of brown you want your skin to be. You can start off with a single application of a light shade and add to it gradually until you are happy with the colour.

- The results from spray tanning are much better than applying creams and lotions by hand, plus the application process is a lot less messy. Providing you allow the tanning solution to dry thoroughly before getting dressed there should be no rub off onto your clothing - something that can't be said for some tanning creams and lotions.

Celebrity Spray Tannning - Denise Richards

Overall, the best spray tan is an easy way of getting a flawless tan whenever and wherever you want one. They pose no health risks and you can choose the shade you want before hand. They fade naturally over time and can be topped up as often as necessary. Spray tanning isn't an expensive process either and in most cases a single application is sufficient to get the tan you want - unlike sunbeds where you often need numerous sessions to achieve your perfect tan. So, you get an even, all-over perfect tan in one session without the sun shining - what more could you ask for?

Contact us at http://www.wctan.com/  or 406.403.4750 for any of your spray tan questions.  We would be more than happy to answer your questions and show you the difference a professional spray tan can make.

Instant Results & Convenience = Spray Tanning Popularity

The art of Spray Tanning has exploded with popularity across the nation as a time-saving alternative for people who desire a golden glow but don’t have the minutes or hours to waste soaking up sun the natural way. Unlike spray tanning booths, a technician applied Spray Tan is more of an art form. This method does not utilize a spray booth, but a trained technician sprays you manually with a spray gun for an even and natural-looking glow.

So how exactly does spray tanning produce such a natural glow? The fine mist that’s released from the spray tanning airbrush coats the skin with tiny pigmented particles that seep into the layers of the skin to deliver a natural glow as it moistures. Skin is left with a silky-smooth feeling that also shines with a rich caramel-to- mocha color (depending on your preference).

Experts say fast results are one of the main reasons people turn to spray tans for that golden look. "With everybody having a busy life, it takes more time to tan in a tanning bed than it does with a spray tan so they get that almost instant tan that's gonna last them five to 10 days."  Spray tanners also say they are very aware of the risk of skin cancer.

Summer Rankin say "It's quick, it's easy, you get results fast and it's much healthier than having to be in the sun all day."

Leah Richardson agrees, "I choose to spray tan because it's fast and it's a lot better for your skin."

Not Sure About Spray Tanning?

The negative press of UV and SUN tanning and the general public’s increasing desire to look their best has launched what is to be the biggest trend to have hit the beauty industry.  Spray tanning is the latest form of tanning and has increased in popularity thanks to the enthusiastic response of Hollywood celebrities.  Many Hollywood celebrities and models are absolutely hooked on spray tanning and have added “Star Approval” to this hot new trend.  With the recent explosion in spray tanning popularity it’s no surprise that our email box and Facebook has seen an increase in the questions about spray tanning. I think the thing that surprised us here is that we have done something like 1,200 spray tans in the last few years, so every once in a while we forget just how quickly spray tanning is becoming a safe sunless tanning option for many indoor and outdoor tanners.

We wanted to take a few minutes and quickly explain a few things about spray tanning so that any of you that might still be a little curious, might have a better idea of what spray tanning is.

About Spray Tanning

  • Natural looking just off the beach color
  • Instant results
  • Safe tanning alternative to tanning in the sun or in a tanning bed
  • Great for last minute events

Approved by the FDA, along with the American Academy of Dermatologists, The Skin Cancer Foundation and The American Medical Association, spray tanning is one of the safest and healthiest ways to tan.  You look thinner, feel sexier; it helps disguise cellulite, stretch marks, blemishes and imperfections.  If you don’t have the time to visit the tanning salon, you can still have a great looking tan without the harmful UV rays.

Airbrush or spray tanning is a fast drying, brown spray on color solution. Most sunless uv free spray tan solutions give you color in two ways. First with a Cosmetic Bronzer (instant) that is visible the moment you apply the product. The next forming color you will receive from your uv free tan is with a DHA Bronzer (dihydroxyacetone) which reacts with the Amino Acids in your skin to develop color anywhere from 2-24 hours with absolutely NO ORANGE color. Streak-free formula’s have built in sheeting action to eliminate spotting and streaking which you would get with many store bought sunless tanning products. Many uv free solutions such as ours utilize skin firming, and anti-aging technology for younger, healthy looking skin. Our premier solution is loaded with essential vitamins and moisturizing agents to keep your skin hydrated, smooth, and looking/feeling fresh.

If you have any questions about spray tanning you can always leave a comment below, we love interacting with our readers.  Or feel free to send us an email or call.  We are more than happy to answer any of your questions or concerns.  We also invite anyone who is "not sure" about spray tanning to try it out.  Whether you've never had one before, or you've had a bad experience in the past, we promise we will change your mind with just one session!  Visit us at www.wctan.com, take a look at our before and after pictures for yourself, click on book ur tan to get yourself scheduled, and we will see you soon!

Love, Lipstick, and Pearls;...Product Review: Spray Tan

Review: Spray Tan

With the wedding coming up, I want to definitely have a "bridal glow", not a Jersey Shore tan and I don't want to look like Casper. I've never been one for fake baking, but have used self-tanners in the past. For all the bridal events coming up (shower, bachelorette party) I wanted to have the tan nailed perfectly by the wedding.

I've heard tons and tons about spray tans so I wanted to check them out. I Googled and asked around and came across Premiere Sunless Tan in Chino, CA. Kari is the owner of PST, it's a mobile service so you can head to her place, or have her come to your home or work for the tan. Sorry it's not a chain store ladies, but if you live in the area you should definitely check them out! I set up my appointment with the owner Kari and headed over.

I had a custom full body spray and I'm so happy with the results! Kari uses a tanner that has bronzer in it so you see the results right away. My tan lines from last summer are barely visible!

Anyways, the tan is the exact color that I was looking for! My tan is even all over my body and I didn't have any orangeness from the spray at all! The color looks very natural, like it's the middle of summer or I just got back from a vacation.

Everything I wear looks so much better now and I don't have any need to wear bronzer on top of the tan. I feel so much more confident and I definitely look thinner do to that 5-10 lbs a tan can shave off of you.  I've never cared too much about being tan, but now I think I'm addicted!! I'm so happy with the results, I bought a package and have 4 tans to use before the big day.

Big Sky Country family doctor warns people about skin cancer prevention (VIDEO)

Even though summer is winding down, skin cancer prevention and usage of sun block should continue throughout the entire year.

Dr. Doug Pitman MD runs Whitefish Personalized Healthcare in Whitefish, Montana, Big Sky country, where outdoors' lovers are at risk for the three levels of skin cancer.

SignatureMD.com urges people to follow the news from two leading non-profit organizations, The SHADE Foundation and Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA), to increase awareness for this preventable form of cancer.

Skin cancer knows no boundaries, and affects every gender, age, ethnicity and region. Dr. Pittman and SignatureMD's efforts are to increase education and outreach efforts and to save lives.

Highlights from Dr. Pittman' statement to Monsters and Critics:

•       Even though skin cancer is the most common cancer, many women and men have not seen a dermatologist for a full body scan for skin cancer.

•       One person dies every hour from melanoma and there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostrate, lung and colon cancers combined.

•       Concern for cancer is high except when it comes to skin cancer, which people do not see as deadly as other types of cancer.

•       When it comes to using sunscreen while being exposed to the sun, only one in five lather it on daily.

•       Most people know of someone diagnosed with skin cancer.

•       It is never acceptable to use indoor tanning beds.

•       A blistering sunburn puts you at higher risk for melanoma.

Spray Tans, Fedoras and Sunscreen: Laura Linney’s Summer Skin Safety Tips

Fair-skinned Laura Linney is no stranger to sunburns, sunscreen … or skin cancer. Growing up with a mother who worked at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the actress has always “been very aware of cancer and how fierce a disease it is.” And now that she’s playing a character fighting stage four melanoma on Showtime’s The Big C, Linney is working to spread the word about skin protection and cancer prevention. Speaking to PEOPLE at Cosmopolitan‘s Safe Sun Awards in Manhattan on Wednesday, where she was honored for her efforts to battle melanoma, she said, “Any attention that I can help raise, I am happy to do.” Her number one piece of advice? “Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen,” she emphasized. “There are now so many different kinds of sunscreen. There are lotions, there are sprays, there are powders. There’s something for everybody out there.” But protecting your skin can come with its fashion perks, too. “I wear a lot of scarves because I get very burned,” she said, adding, “I love hats. I do the big crazy, southern-lady gardening hat, I do the baseball cap; I love fedoras.” If you do crave that golden glow, “Roxanne Rizzo has a spray tan that’s very, very good,” Linney shared. But staying sun-safe doesn’t mean you can’t hit the beach or spend an afternoon outside. “Everything in moderation,” she said. “It just means you have to grow up and be a little responsible about it.” –Hannah Kay Hunt

How Brown Will I Get From Spray Tanning?

When we hear from new clients, the first thing everyone wants to know is how brown they will get from their first spray tanning session. The thing about spray tanning is that no one can determine for sure how dark your tan is going to be until you have tried it at least once. Different skin types react differently to the DHA in sunless tanning solutions resulting in a range of different colors.

Other factors that can determine the color of your skin after a spray tanning session include the custom level of the application applied by the technician.  A professional spray tan technician will base this upon your natural skin tone and the desired look you are going for.  Also, the bronzer in the solution can affect the final color of your tan.  Many companies offer a clear solution, however through our experience, the bronzer will have an impact on the coloration.  At WestCoast we use only the highest quality products with natural looking bronzers, leaving you with the most natural looking tan!  No Orange what so ever!  We promise!

The most important factor in determining how dark your spray tan will be is the length of time you wait after your session before taking your shower. The longer the DHA solution is left on the skin, the longer it has to react with the amino acids on the skin resulting in a darker tan. Sometimes it can take a couple of spray tan sessions in order to achieve the level of darkness that you are looking for with your tan; however, most of our clients are extremely satisfied with the color that they achieve from their first spray tanning session!

If you have been interested in trying a spray tan, but you have some reservations.....your scared it will come out like in the movies, your friends tell your they turn you orange, you hear they smell, make you sticky, and stain your bedsheets, etc.  I will promise you, with a WestCoast custom spray tan we will put your fears to rest!  You will be the talk of all your friends & co-workers, but it will be about how amazing you look, and you can tell them all "Yes, It's a Spray Tan.........and it's fabulous!"

Go to our website, check out our pics, get booked, and we'll make you hooked!

Eight Things To Know About Spray Tanning

They say you can't predict the weather, but that means you also can't predict when - or even whether - you'll be able to get a natural tan. This is one of the reasons spray tans are becoming so popular. Otherwise known as a 'sunless tan', they allow you to be a bronzed beauty any time of year, whatever the weather. Here are eight things to know about spray tanning.

Exfoliating is vital
When it comes to spray tanning, it is very important that you exfoliate your skin properly. This is to remove the dead layers of skin so that you are essentially starting from a blank, fresh canvas. This will give your spray tan the best start in life and will also remove any makeup or perfume from your skin, which is vital as these can act as a barrier to the tan.

It works for any skin type
Particularly if you have very fair skin, you will no doubt know the frustration of never tanning at all - or worse, burning at the first sign of summer. Luckily, getting a spray tan is a good alternative as it works on everyone. People's skin might develop the tan to different extents, but having a pale complexion is no barrier to spray tanning.

The active ingredient
The active ingredient in spray tan is known as dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short). This reacts with the amino acids in your skin to develop the tan over a period of twelve hours. This means you should avoid showering for the first twelve hours after getting your tan done to give it time to develop on your skin.

It's safe
Spray tanning is popular because it removes the vast majority of the safety hazards associated with sun tanning. DHA is a natural chemical that has been used in cosmetics for over thirty years and it is very safe. Only a tiny number of people are allergic to it so you will more than likely be fine with it, but if you are worried then you can do a small skin test first to make sure.

Longevity
Depending on how well you exfoliated your skin and how your skin normally behaves, your spray tan should last between five and ten days. You can make it last as long as possible by moisturising your skin on a daily basis so it and your tan will stay in good condition for as long as possible.

Types of application
There are two main types of spray tan application. You can choose to go to a technician who will manually spray on the tan for you, or to a salon where they use an automated machine to do it. Obviously, your preference will affect which one of these you decide to go for.

Very effective
It is estimated that one spray tanning session is the rough equivalent to around six sessions on a sunbed, making it a very effective form of tanning as you will get the colour you are after much more quickly.

They look great
Finally, this can't be said enough. Spray tans look great. They give you a healthy colour and mean that you can have a safe tan all year round, so if you are after a bit of an image change, you should definitely give spray tanning a go.

Spray Tanning - A Growing Trend

Spray tanning is no longer just for the Celebrities of the world—it’s gaining popularity, and it’s going global.

Since 1989, the sunless tanning technique has come a long way. Once the territory of the déclassé, it’s now used by princesses and politicians alike, according to a story that traces its origins in Bloomberg Businessweek.

From 2005 the market has doubled in size. It’s driven by celebrity endorsements such as Jennifer Aniston, and some of the more classy establishments charge $350 for a tan that will last no longer than a week.

And, as the industry develops, you’re also less likely to come out looking like an Oompa Loompa—something to keep in mind this holiday weekend.

Visit http://www.wctan.com/ for the most natural Spray Tan available in Great Falls!  We will even treat you like a celebrity, and come to you with our Mobile Spray Tanning Service!

Spray Tanning Myths: Real Guys Don’t Tan

There are quite a few myths when it comes to spray tanning and one of them is that only guys that are considered “Guidos” utilize spray tanning or Body Builders for competitions.  This is a complete myth, more and more "regular guys" are deciding the spray tan is the right choice.

One problem that does seem to occur is that many guys are afraid of the image that they will receive if people find out that they are utilizing spray tanning.  However, the real story behind all the good natured ribbing by all your friends or co-workers is secretly they wish they were MAN enough to do it themselves!  Jealousy, plain and simple.  You look good with a spray tan (at least with a WestCoast Spray Tan), people notice, tell you how good you look, etc.  Who doesn't enjoy/want compliments?  This is why today more guys than you could ever believe utilize spray tanning as a way to obtain a natural looking tan without damaging their skin.

It’s the best kept secret of countless male stars, from athletes to actors. But why is a spray tan for men the new essential? A spray tan will accentuate your muscles, brighten your skin tone and give you a healthy look while also enhancing your natural colourings.

In an age where men and women alike are concerned about the health of their skin, more men than ever are utilizing safer tanning methods. It isn’t just those “Guidos” who go over the top with their bright orange tans that utilize “fake” tanning; in fact most men that utilize spray tanning don’t stand out from a crowd, at least not when they use WestCoast Tanning Co. because our no streak, no orange guaranteed formula means that guys and girls alike can get a realistic healthy tan without looking like they just fell out of Jersey Shore.

Guys, don’t resort to tanning beds and sunburns! Try a quick, effective spray tan for a fast and natural looking tan in only 10 minutes!

It’s just as important for men to avoid the damage of natural sun tanning & tanning beds with a safe spray tan , Men have even higher numbers of Skin Cancer than Women!

Common Myths About Spray Tans

In this article I want to summarize the most common misconceptions people have about spray tans. Most of these fake tan myths originated from the early days of tanning products when the technology was still new. Today we have sunless tanning products which not only work well and are relatively inexpensive, but they look so natural on your skin that people won’t be able to tell that you have a fake tan.

Spray tan myths

Spray Tan Myth 1:
Spray tan will make you turn orange

This will never happen if your spray tan technician has been properly trained to apply the correct spray tan solution for your skin type. Applying a solution that is too dark for somebody with very pale skin can increase the chances of an orange skin color. However today’s spray tan technicians are expertly trained to identify the correct solution darkness according to skin type.

Another possible cause for orange spray tan is if the spray tan was applied unevenly or incorrectly or the person getting the spray tan did not exfoliate properly or they used perfumes or moisturizers on their skin before the spray tan. All of these are preventable which minimizes the chance of the dreaded orange skin color.

Spray Tan Myth 2:
My skin is too pale for a spray tan

As explained in the myth above, there is a specific spray tan solution for all skin types – even the palest and freckliest skin type.  So if you are the type of person who always burnt in the sun and never could get a suntan because you are too pale, then a correctly applied spray tan can give you a realistic sun-kissed tone.

Spray Tan Myth 3:
My skin is too dark for a spray tan

Not true. As for the people with very pale skin, there are also spray tan solutions catering for people with naturally dark skin. In most cases people with dark skin get a spray tan when they wish to even out or conceal skin tone blemishes.

Spray Tan Myth 4:
The spray tan will wash off in the shower and my money will go down the drain

This is absolutely not true if you follow the recommended advice of your spray tan technician about how to care for your spray tan. Another major reason why this myth exists is that when people have a shower after waiting the recommended minimum 8 hours, they may see some dark fallout coming off their skin as they are showering. This is perfectly normal and is simply the bronzing solution coming off your skin as you are washing it. The spray tan ingredients which give you the gradual color do not wash off because they have combined with your topmost skin layer.

If looked after properly, your spray tan can last you for weeks!

Spray Tan Myth 5:
All spray tans smell bad

Certainly in the early days the pure DHA spray tan solutions and fake tan lotions had a hideous smell. This was caused by the DHA reacting with your skin’s amino acids which in turn produced an unpleasant odor as a by product. However, with the improved ingredients and technology of modern fake tans, the only smell you might notice is a pleasant perfumy or fruity aroma.

Spray Tan Myth 6:
The color of my skin immediately after my spray tan is what my tan will look like

The color of your skin immediately following your spray tan session will usually be quite different when you compare it a few days later if you follow the maintenance tips given by your spray tan technician. What you usually see immediately after your spray is the combination of the bronzer and DHA solution which has not yet combined with your dead skin layer. After you wait at least 8 hours and then have a shower, the bronzer will wash off leaving the DHA on your skin. At first you might look subtly lighter, but as each hour and day goes by your color will deepen progressively due to the effects of the DHA.

How Fergie Gets Her Glow

Fergie has a sneaky trick when it comes to looking like she has a perfect glow all of the time. Instead of piling on product, or baking in the sun – Fergie says she gets frequent light spray tans.

Fergie admits she used to be a sun worshipper and is still paying the price today by trying to undo the damage done to her skin.

My First Spray Tan - Word to the Brides Blog

My First Spray Tan

Originally I had no intention of attending the Bridal Fashion Debut in an effort to continue my crusade as Roberta Rebellion. But then my mom said something about a free spray tan and my inner Jersey Shore resident got all fist pump-y. So I set my alarm for 11:30, put on my best “I’m excited to be here” face and entered the Phoenix Convention Center.

Luckily my mom understood my feelings about weddings (she was, after all, one of four people to read my last blog) and did her best to walk rapidly past the booths offering free color consultations (Are you an Autumn Bride? Find out now!) But all this pales in comparison to the real reason we were there.

FREE SPRAY TAN

This was my first airbrush spray tan and since I was nervous about the unusual conditions, it would not be done quietly. Most people get the luxury of going into an enclosure while someone sprays you with vanilla scented goo, but we’re Segalls, which means everything must be done publically and with little concern for other people’s tastes.

I had done all the pre-tan exfoliating and was ready to get my bronze on. The only thing left to do was pull my hair securely out of my face and then delicately disrobe in front of an estimated crowd of OH MY GOD WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

It should be said (so I’m gonna) that this sort of exhibitionism is not for the weak. I would’ve expected to see one of those roller coaster warnings outside the booth which would read:

  • Do not spray tan unless you are this tall
  • Do not attempt spray tan if you suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, certain heart conditions, or a body-image high school trauma that you still talk about in therapy
  • Consult a physician before doing something that is totally and completely insane

But I will say that after the original shock of wearing glorified underwear in front of a crowd wore off, I felt sort of free. Not in a “freeballin’” sort of way, but I felt free to be less self conscious in everyday situations.

Practically naked in public and not getting arrested.
Take THAT, College.

Anytime a new crowd would gather I would first try to slow down my heart rate from “sprint” to “light jog,” but then I would quickly turn into my smug self and scoff at the lesser beings outside the booth. Yeah, YOU’RE not this brave. It occurred to me that if I can be this naked in front of onlookers, then I shouldn’t be so embarrassed when I go to the grocery store without lip gloss. Not that I would ever do that, of course, but theoretically I felt like I had experienced a moment of Zen.

After my human car wash, I was thankfully able to put all my clothes back on and join the rest of the Puritans. Then my mom got into the action. So, yeah, she’s brave as hell too.

Many thanks go out to Scottsdale Salon and Spray Tan. They were a blast to hang out with while I was having my panic attack. Not to mention the fact that we now look pleasantly sun-kissed without the steaming hot side of cancer.

The Adventures of Lesalina

Twentysomething with a passion for life, style, and extra dirty martinis.

Leslie-s-New-Tan_photo_medium

If y’all haven’t noticed by now, I’m a *big* fan of Spray Tanning. Here’s why:

  • It’s a safe alternative to sunbathing and tanning beds – no wrinkles, no skin cancer
  • When done properly, it looks just as good as a real tan – no lines or sunburns
  • You feel lighter and tighter – less cellulite, looks like you’ve been hitting the gym
Bathing suit season is here and once these little scars on my stomach heal up, I’ll be ready for my bikini but I won’t dare step one foot in those bottoms until I’ve had my Spray Tan. I suggest you do the same (the Spray Tan, not the gallbladder removal – unless you have problems with that, in which case, I know a great surgeon). Once you get over the idea of standing in your skivies in front of a stranger, there’s nothing to it!
(I promise it’s not that bad – just make sure you shave, smell nice, and I found it helps to stick with the same technician, same person = less people seeing you almost naked.)

However, you will want to carefully follow the before and after care instructions. While the lovely people at  WestCoast Tanning provide information on getting the best results from your Spray Tan, true to form, I’ve added my two cents (in italics) to the checklist below. Considering I’m a bit of an old-pro, I thought my tried and true methods might be useful for you too!

Before you tan:

  • Shower, shave and exfoliate your skin before you come in. It’s important to make sure that your skin is free of lotions, creams, and oils. This ensures there are no barriers between the Spray Tan solution and your skin.
  • If you’re going to your appointment directly after showering, resist the urge to apply deodorant. While it won’t hurt your application, you will get green marks under your arms which is funny but also awkward when people stare at you in line at the grocery store.
During the tan:
  • Each Spray Tan application takes 10 to 15 minutes. You’re in and out in less than half an hour, or if using their mobile service, they are in and out of your home in 30 minutes. That’s something any person-on-the-go can pencil in. Once you get into a routine you’ll usually be out in half that time, assuming your appointment is running on schedule.
After the tan:
  • Loose-fitting, darker clothing is recommended to be worn after the application to help prevent the smudging of the tanning solution. For the summer, designate one or two black summer dresses (or t-shirt and shorts) as your Spray Tan attire. I keep one in my car with a pair of flip-flops in case of any last-minute appointments!
  • The longevity of a Spray Tan will vary from person to person based on lifestyle and skin. Daily moisturizing will help maintain your tan. For most people, a Spray Tan will last between 7 and 10 days. This is non-negotiable, if you want your tan to last you MUST MOISTURIZE. My own scientific studies have proven this is key.
At Home:
  • Before you jump in the pool or shower, or do a sweaty workout, we recommend you wait at least 8 hours. The Spray Tan solution requires this amount of time to react with the amino acids in the skin to produce the optimum results. Once you wait your 8 hours and jump in the shower, there will be no risk of staining your clothing or other cloth-based materials whatsoever.
  • Take care when washing your hands. I know this goes against the proper method of hand-washing but try to only wash the insides of your hands for the first 8 hours. If you wash the tops and your wrists, the Spray Tan will come off and you will have lines. Gross, maybe but it’s worth it. Also, I won’t be offended if you never shake my hand after that little announcement.
  • Be aware: Until your first shower, nylon, silk and elastics may be stained by the Spray Tan solution. There may be some residue from the Spray Tan solution left on other fabrics, but it will wash away in the laundry.
  • Protect your toilet seat! After repeated exposure to your Spray Tanned ass sitting on your porcelain throne, it will begin to take on the color. A simple squat or paper protective measure will prevent this.
Phew. Okay, I know this looks like a bunch of rules but once you get the routine down it’s as normal as getting your nails done. Don’t even get me started on my manicure survival techniques.

Seriously though, please be safe in the sun this summer. Now get out there and get your Spray Tan on.

Article from the Billings Gazette

Melanoma survivors say 'never again' to tanning beds

At 15, Jessica Coffman was enticed by the allure of the bronze glow she got by lying for 20 minutes in a tanning bed.  The rays produced a golden tan that boosted her self-confidence before the annual twirp dances and spring proms at West High.

The young woman of Italian and Irish descent sports dark hair and dark eyes characteristic of Italians and the pale skin associated with Irish. She longed for the darker skin her mother has.  “I felt I looked better with tanned skin,” Coffman said.  She spent hundreds of dollars and many hours in a tanning bed, visiting the salon two to three times a week for several months each year. It was her go-to, must-do before her wedding day. And, to ensure the glow on her big day, Coffman said she “double-dipped,” relying on indoor rays and the natural rays of the sun to secure the desired golden tan.

At age 25, a decade after Coffman began her love affair with tanning beds, her family physician noticed a mole on Coffman’s right shoulder during a routine physical exam and referred her to a dermatologist. The mole, which had grown, was skin cancer.  “I remember going to my car, calling my husband and sobbing,” said Coffman, now 27.  Although the surgery has left her cancer free, Coffman said, the 26 stitches required to remove the cancer have left a telltale scar. She said it is so unsightly that she refuses to wear tank tops.
Coffman is one of a growing number of young women who have developed melanoma and attribute it in large part to use of indoor tanning beds.

Once considered an old person’s disease, melanoma has a particular grip on young women. Since 1992, rates of the disease have risen 3 percent a year in white women ages 15 to 39, according to the American Cancer Society.  Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. The chance of getting it increases as you get older, but people of any age can get the disease. Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults ages 25 to 29. Each year, more than 50,000 people in the U.S. learn that they have melanoma.

In April, Susan Anderson, 25, underwent surgery for skin cancer on her abdomen. Anderson, a registered nurse in Billings, said she believes it was due primarily to genetics but said using an indoor tanning bed was a factor, too.  “As I aged I could tell I developed more moles,” Anderson said. “I will never go in a tanning bed again. Spray tanning is a good alternative.”

Coffman, an occupational therapist, and Anderson discourage the use of indoor tanning beds and encourage regular appointments with a dermatologist, use of sunscreen and regular self-checks for changes in moles.
About 35 percent of 17-year-old girls use indoor tanning devices, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. According to a 2010 study by the Melanoma Research Foundation, there is a definitive correlation between indoor tanning and skin cancer. People who have used tanning beds are 74 percent more likely than others to develop melanoma, according to the study.

Dr. Roberta Hawk of Yellowstone Dermatology and Skin Cancer Clinic said she has seen an increase in the number of melanoma cases and not just among young white women.  “It’s a very real problem,” Hawk said.
She said she sees five to 10 people each day with flat moles, and each person has upward of 50 moles. Not all are cancerous, of course. She said her biggest challenge is that most people don’t understand the potential risk of cancer — or don’t want to hear it — until a friend has been diagnosed with it.  Her mission is to educate people about the need to use sunscreen 365 days a year, indoors and outdoors. Hawk said sunlight can penetrate car windows, even office windows, taking a toll on a person’s skin.

A bill in the 2009 Montana Legislature would have prohibited the use of tanning facilities by anyone under 16 without written consent from parent or legal guardian, according to the Department of Public Health and Human Services. The bill failed. There was no attempt to pass similar legislation this year, according to DPPHS.  Coffman said the money she spent for her golden glow ultimately cost thousands of dollars in medical expenses.  “The golden tan is not worth the damage you’re doing to your body,” Coffman said.

The Remarkable Revolution of the “Spray Tan”

It can most definitely be stated as such - Revolutionary.

Take the topic at hand. Sunless Tanning. It is more commonly known as “Spray Tanning”, and it has come such a long way since the days of being associated with looking “orange” or “streaky”. This is now an activity that celebrities partake in as a part of their lifestyle, as well as before walking the red carpet. Heck - We all know Ryan Seacrest gets his “spray tan on” before his weekly bout of American Idol. He probably has his own personal “Sunless Tanning Technician”. Now a days, you really don’t even have to leave your home to get a great tan. It really is the smart, convenient, healthy alternative to over exposure of UV rays.

Now I know everyone’s first question when going to get a spray tan for the first time is “Am I going to be orange, or streaky?” The answer is NO. That is a faux paux of Y2K. Let’s get with the times folks. Current formulations have been tweaked, and tested, and then tweaked, and tested again, to make sure that it is just right. Just think of the way we as people have evolved and the technological advances we have made since the 90’s. Well, the sunless tanning industry has evolved just as rapidly and in a very promising direction; with the way our society is, it really had no choice. Everyone has to look good - hair, gym, and a great tan. To get that great tan, one needs to have the right level of color applied to their skin, according to their skin tone. With today’s technology, most tanning solutions have more than one option. With the options at hand, who wouldn’t choose to have instant color when getting a professional spray tan? Most sunless tanning guns have multiple levels of color, ranging from a barely there sun-kissed glow, to a look of the islands, if you so desire. And no - orange is not one of the colors to choose from.

The second question that is always asked is “How long is this going to last?” Well, how long does a tan last when you come back from a nice week long vacation in Cabo? The tan from your vacation is going to fade, and may even peel off over the course of a few weeks. A sunless tan will typically last 7-10 days, depending on the way you care for it.  It is not going to peel like a real suntan might. I don’t know about you, but seeing someone with a peeling tan is definitely not attractive by any means.

Besides giving you an amazing “just off the beach” look and lasting a week or more, sunless tanning is also a dose of goodness for your skin. Most formulations contain some type of antioxidants, along with vitamins and aloe. Last time I checked, the only thing you got from over exposing yourself to UV rays, besides an amazing dose of Vitamin D, was wrinkles. We have all seen Something About Mary right?

There are a wide range of options out there to choose from when considering who to get your tan from. Over the past few years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of spray tan businesses pop up.  Many such businesses use low cost equipment and solutions, and of course have limited spray tanning experience.  As a result the quality of their service will be noticeable.........and unfortunately that will be on YOU!  Be sure to choose a reputable company, that has experience, professional staff, real reviews from customers, and quality service.  If someone walks into your house with a machine that looks like they're about to paint your room, and it sounds and smells like an auto shop, then maybe you should think twice.  To get the most bang for your buck, you will want to find a spray tan technician who is using the top of the line equipment on the market right now. But remember the age old saying, “You get what you pay for!”

The real key here is that achieving tanned skin has become so much easier to obtain. IT’S MOBILE!!!! How awesome is that?! Tanning can come to you. Of course this has been around for a little while, but it is just really starting to come to surface with everything else that is now so easily accessible from home. Just think about it...when was the last time you went into a blockbuster to rent a movie? Why would you? We all have access to On Demand or something similar through our cable TV provider. We all also have the option for Netflix or something along those lines. Heck - you can even order groceries to be delivered to your home from major supermarkets (well maybe not here in Montana, but trust me you can). Everything is just becoming so much more convenient for us as a society. This is one of the biggest steps for the beauty industry and I have a feeling that Sunless tanning is going to be a house hold name, before long. Some may call it lazy, but frankly it’s brilliant - Revolutionary if you will. Welcome to the future of Sunless Tanning.

Spray Tan vs Tanning Beds

Tanning Bed - 7 sessions   /     Spray Tan over existing Tan

In just 10 minutes you can achieve the same results as 7 tanning bed sessions or many, many hours in the sun!

How long does it take to get a tan?

Tanning Beds: While some may notice significant results in just a few sessions, it can take others several weeks of tanning three times a week to get a “base tan”.  Output of the tanning equipment and the tanning lamps is also a factor.  Just as a tan will gradually fade away, you must gradually build it by tanning at least every other day for at least 6 sessions.  If tanning for an event, you should start your tanning sessions no later than one week to ensure a base tan by the upcoming date.

Spray Tan:  A single tanning session for a custom spray tan generally takes about 10 minutes.  The ingredient in the solution which actually reacts with the outer layer of skin producing a tan effect typically needs 6 to 8 hours to "set" the tan.  Some companies offer a Rapid Tan, which can produce the same effect in only 2 to 4 hours.  Although most Spray Tan companies encourage clients to wait until the next morning to shower, this will give your tan the maximum benefits.

How long will my tan last?

Tanning Beds:  From the last time you tan, your tan should last anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.  There are several ways to prolong a tan from a tanning bed.  Of course to maintain your tan, you should regularly use a tanning bed at least 1 to 3 times a week.  Other ways to prolong your tan include using a self-tanning lotion with a bronzer, frequently moisturizing to put back what is being taken out from the beds, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  Dry skin will cause your tan to look uneven and splotchy more quickly, so it's in your best interest to keep your skin hydrated.  This will prolong your tan and ensure it fades evenly.

Spray Tan:  Most Spray Tans will last on average 5 to 10 days.  As with Tanning Beds or laying out, how long your tan lasts has a lot to do with how well you take care of your skin.  To prolong your sunless tan and ensure even fading, it is extremely important to stay moisturized and keep your skin hydrated.  It is recommended to moisturize 2 to 3 times a day, but be careful what you are using as a moisturizer as some will actually break the tan down more quickly.   No matter how you tan, your skin naturally sheds each and every day, allowing new skin cells to come to the surface.  This will of course cause fading of  your tan.

What are the dangers?

Tanning Beds:  Tanning beds are commonly associated with skin cancer and contribute to premature aging. There is no way to combat either other than to stay out of tanning beds. Tanning beds should not be used for pregnant women or women who are nursing. Also, consult your doctor before tanning in a bed to be sure there will be no reactions from any medications you may be taking, and always wear protective goggles over your eyes when tanning in a tanning bed as UV exposure can be damaging to the eyes.

Spray Tan:  Should only be used for topical application.  Spray Tans should not be inhaled, sprayed into the eyes, or directly onto private areas.  Always keep your mouth closed during application, and tuck lips or wear lip balm as a barrier.  Nose plugs are also recommended to prevent inhalation of the solution.  When Spray Tanning the face, close your eyes completely and hold your breath.

What do I get for the price?

Tanning Beds:  On average the cost is $6 to $12 for a single (walk in) session, or $30 to $80 for monthly package depending on the type of bed used.  What you get:  Natural looking tan developed in an average of 5 to 7 sessions.  Benefits of Vitamin D.  Increased risk of developing skin cancer.  Proven increase in wrinkles and aging of the skin.

Spray Tan:  On average the cost is $25 to $40 for a single session, mobile spray tanning services tend to run about $10 more.  What you get:  Natural looking tan fully developed in about 12 to 24 hours.  The convenience of a mobile service coming to your location.  Safe alternative to UV tanning, which puts moisture back into your skin rather than taking it out.  Most Spray Tan solutions are loaded with Vitamins, antioxidants, anti-aging, skin firming, and skin rejuvenating properties.  Helping reverse skin damage and promote healthier, younger looking skin.

When it comes to tanning, please be safe and make the right decisions.  Not only for Now but for what’s to come in your Future!

It seems with Spray Tanning you really do get what you pay for!!
